Warning: thick patches of blog ahead. The past 19 hours of my life have been eventful. It began with my boss calling a solemn assembly of his direct reports yesterday afternoon, to announce his impending semi-retirement. Fortunately, he is phasing out the retirement, which should leave the office where I work and others in the related creative/writing/design departments in fairly decent shape. Neil (the boss) has been a champion for the woefully underfunded and understaffed marketing/creative departments at our university, and it's going to be tough to fill his shoes.
So after the hour-long meeting, at which all direct reports were sworn to secrecy, I scrambled back to the office to revise a news release Neil had already written, and prepared it for release after the all-employee staff meeting held this morning. Several staffers had planned a special event to commemorate Neil's 30 years with the campus today, and went through with it. The event, a burlesque of Gilbert and Sullivan's "When I Was a Lad" from HMS Pinafore, was great fun. Very participatory.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. Wednesday night, of course, was church night. So after polishing the news release and running it by the boss again, I drove to church, whereupon my pastor handed me the name and phone number of a man whose daughter had just been busted for doing Ritalin at school and had been suspended for 10 days. The man and his wife were seeking some sort of pastoral counseling, and, saith the pastor to me, "you were highly recommended." Yeah. By whom, I wonder.
I make the call, and the parents and the girl agree to meet with me around 8-ish, after services.
Speaking of services: the services were fantastic. We had communion, and also a foot-washing, which was very special. All the kids and teens stayed out to participate, and after communion and foot-washing, during an altar call four people either received Christ or rededicated themselves, including a teen who has returned to church with her parents recently after a hiatus of months. Makes me wanna holler: Go, God! Go!
Counseling: The girl and I will meet for counseling on Sunday afternoon. Pray that all goes well.
Tomorrow -- that's Friday, April 5 -- I and some others from church will be driving a truckload of supplies to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to send to an orphanage in Malawi. So, I won't be blogging on Friday -- and probably not on Saturday, either. I plan to write on Saturday, and edit my Net addiction manuscript, which I received from the publisher on Tuesday but haven't had time to look at yet.
A few links of note: I've added the blog of the punk monkey himself to my blogroll, along with several other recent additions. Look to your left for the ever-changing list.
