Whitey to the rescue In an attempted rebuttal to those who claim the Katrina disaster has exposed America's evil, racist roots, C-Log: Conservative Web Log presents American Racism: A Slideshow, which features 10 photos of white folks helping African American survivors of Hurricane Katrina. (At right is one of those photos; it depicts New Orleans evacuee Phillip Smith, 59, being hugged by LA Dream Center Senior Pastor Matthew Barnett.)
I know these photos are supposed to help convince us that racism no longer exists -- or at least that racism doesn't exist in the relief effort. But there's something about the presentation of these photos that seems awfully patronizing to me. It seems to imply that only good, kind white folks are out there helping their traumatized black brothers and sisters.
I know that the people in those photos are working to help their neighbor, and I have no opposition to that. It's just the way in which C-Log presents them that sticks in my moderate craw.
