NL Division Series Game 1: Cardinals 8, Padres 5 Is there a new Mr. October in the game? Chants of Reg-GIE! Reg-GIE! could be heard around Busch Stadium today after Reggie Sanders hit a grand slam to lift the St. Louis Cardinals over the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of the NL Division Series. The Cardinals scored eight unanswered runs off Padres ace Jake Peavey, who is out for the rest of the series now, due to a broken rib. Chris Carpenter wasn't exactly back to Cy Young form, but the Cardinals defense helped out, turning double plays at key moments. But, as I feared, our crack bullpen cracked once again, giving up five runs in the final three innings -- three of those in the ninth, when Jason Isringhausen came in and began melting down before striking out the final batter -- the Padres' potential ninth run -- with the bases loaded.
I'm glad we won today, but as I told you earlier, I have reason to be nervous about this Cardinals team.
