Bob Geldof got screwed The man in the middle of that photo on the cover of Time's annual person(s) of the year issue ought to be Bob Geldof and not Bono. Geldof is the force behind last summer's global Live 8 concert that drew attention to poverty in Africa. Of course, having Bono as the front man helps draw attention to the cause. Bono has been the point man for Geldof, so I don't mean to slight him. Much. But as Time lauds Bono and the Gateses (no quibble there; the Gates Foundation is contributing much toward AIDS and poverty relief -- now if only the pharmaceutical giants would join the effort and provide some affordable drugs to Africa), Geldof continues to fight the good fight. Most recently, he slammed Middle Eastern nations for doing little to help fight poverty in Africa. This from the same guy who lauded George W. Bush and the U.S. for doing something -- maybe not enough, but something -- to combat poverty. True, the U.S. could do more (if we weren't spending all our money on nation-building elsewhere). But look at what rest of the world is doing? Geldof is continuing to fight for the cause of making poverty history. Good for you, Bob. If I were on Time's editorial board, you'd have my vote.
