When reporting goes wrong Interesting NPR story (audio) about the media's role in amplifying the miscommunications surrounding the Sago mine disaster. See also Editor and Publisher's piece, "Media Report Miracle Mine Rescue -- Then Carry the Tragic Truth," for further analysis of the media's role in exacerbating the situation. I'm not saying the media is entirely to blame for the shoddy reportage that came out of this situation, but they certainly ought to look inward and determine whether the rush to fill an info void is worth the risk of spreading unverified information.
