At Mizzou, the Mighty Quin calls it quits (Blogger's note: If you're not interested in University of Missouri-Columbia basketball, then don't waste your time reading this post. I care, because UMC is my alma mater.)
The folks at FireQuinSnyder.com almost got their wish. Except Quin -- the former Duke basketball guard who became a rising star as an assistant for (and protoge of) Coach K before becoming the University of Missouri-Columbia's basketball team -- wasn't fired. He resigned.
Under Snyder, the Missouri Tigers basketball program has been rocked by scandal and has underwhelmed fans. Snyder did take the team to one Elite 8 finish in the NCAA Tournament, but in recent years, after the Ricky Clemons scandal (timeline), the program just hasn't been the same. Under Snyder, the team has never finished higher than fifth in the Big 12.
MU issued a carefully worded news release last night that did not use the word "resignation" or confirm that Snyder was finished as coach of the Tigers.
"Quin Snyder will not coach the University of Missouri men’s basketball team this Sunday. Associate Head Coach Melvin Watkins will serve as the acting head coach for the Kansas State game," the release said.
According to sources close to the situation, Snyder met with a university official Thursday after he told reporters he had no plans to resign. The official told Snyder he wouldn’t be back after this season. That caused Snyder to tell his players yesterday (Thursday) that he would no longer coach this season. ...
Sources indicated that the reason for MU’s vague statement and lack of official response to Snyder’s departure was that university officials were caught off guard by Snyder’s announcement on Thursday. They also indicated that MU officials have not worked out the details of the coach’s contract termination. Snyder is under contract through 2008.
The Tigers (10-11, 3-7 Big 12) have lost six straight games by lopsided scores, including Tuesday’s 90-64 loss to Baylor. Since that defeat, Snyder had come under increasing fire from fans and media.
