Punk's not dead...it's just pushin' product

Let's see: Which was first, Jaguar advertising its luxury cars to the tune of the Clash's "London Calling," or Carnival Cruise Lines pushing three-day packages while Iggy sang "Lust for Life" in the background?

Then Miller Beer used Devo's "Freedom of Choice" in a clever but short-lived TV spot. The Ramones' "Blitzkrieg Bop" has been used to sell cars, soda pop and a cell phone service. Another Clash tune -- "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" -- serves as the soundtrack for yet another car commercial, and Cingular is using a cover of Blondie's "Hanging on the Telephone."

All great punk tunes live on, it seems, in the soundtrack of TV ads.

What else? Oh, Amy cringes "when music from The Cure is used to sell photo printers" (link). And now, Pop Culture Junk Mail reports that the Go Gos have sold out to Papa John's Pizza for its forthcoming "We Got the Meat" promotion.

What's next for the punk classics of old?

  • A struggling hotel chain marketing its rooms to the tune of "Pretty Vacant," by the Sex Pistols?

  • XM or Sirius appropriating the rights to Elvis Costello's "Radio, Radio"?

  • Google advertising its search-engine supremacy to the tune of "Search and Destroy"?

  • A 527 organization using the Clash's "Death or Glory" to market our war in Iraq?

    Just wondering.
