Advanced Rock Lit: More Books about Singers and Songs
Readers who commented on the recent post about great rock'n'roll books suggested a few great books not on the Earvolution top 10, including:

Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991, by Michael Azzerad (via Courtney, seconded by Drake.

The "woefully out-of-print" Cheese Chronicles: The True Story of a Rock N Roll Band You've Never Heard of, by Tommy Womack, nominated by Whisky Prajer, who continues his own countdown of favorite movies. (Gidget, Whisky? Seriously?)

Last Gang in Town: The Story and Myth of the Clash, nominated by Brendan (aka Leptard), who describes it as "a well-put-together biography of The Clash that's unsentimental (especially about the 'Clash myth') but fair, and doesn't obscure the author's obvious respect for the music."

Rip it Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-1984, by Simon Reynolds, and Shakey: Neil Young's Biography, by Jimmy McDonough, two more books Drake swears by. I read the Reynolds book earlier this year.

My own suggestions, We Got the Neutron Bomb: The Untold Story of L.A. Punk, by Marc Spitz and Brendan Mullen; England's Dreaming: Anarchy, Sex Pistols, Punk Rock, and Beyond, by Jon Savage (a classic study of how punk took root in the UK); and Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk, by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain (seconded by Drake).
