"Freedom of Choice," by Devo
One of the weirdest new wave/punk bands came from the straight-laced working-class town of Akron, Ohio, and created a sound that foreshadowed electronica. With "Freedom of Choice," Devo weighed in on a debate as old as Christianity itself: the old predestination versus free will conundrum. Their conclusion echoes Sartre and the existentialists: humanity is free. But, do we really wish to be? In Devo's words: Freedom of choice, it's what you've got. Freedom from choice, it's what you want.
