Punk Rock Countdown: No. 23 "We Are the One," the Avengers
we are not Jesus Christ! we are not fascist pigs! we are not capitalist industrialists! we are not communists
we are the one
The short-lived San Francisco band the Avengers are probably best remembered for opening for the Sex Pistols in their final concert -- at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom in January 1978. The group didn't even stick around long enough to create a full album -- just a couple of EPs. But they created an uplifting punk anthem with "We Are the One." Boldly proclaiming, "We are the leaders of tomorrow" and "we will build a better tomorrow/the youth of today will be the tool," the Avengers put forth a positive message through the seemingly nihilistic style.
