NL Playoffs, Game 2: St. Louis Cardinals 6, Houston Astros 4 Slam-a-lama-ding-dong, what a game! Cards hammer Houston's bullpen to win, and go up 2-0 in the National League Championship Series over the Astros. Now the series heads to Houston for Saturday's matchup.
But, about last night. It was a nasty, rainy night, unfit for baseball. Rain delayed the start time by about 30 minutes, and I thought about my friends who were no doubt shivering as they waited for the game to begin. (Yesterday I started coming down with a head cold/sore throat thing, so I'm happy I was watching the game on TV from the warmth and comfort of my living room sofa instead of braving the steady drizzle at Busch Stadium.) The shaky Matt Morris showed up to pitch. In five innings, he walked five, threw one wild pitch, balked once and gave up long balls to Carlos Beltran (an impressive first-inning smash) and Morgan Ensberg. But luck was with the Cards, for somehow Matty Mo -- erratic, yes, but always a gamer -- made it out of the jams, thanks to a couple of Astros mistakes and heads-up plays by the Cardinals defense.
Morris left after five innings, giving up only 3 runs. But it could have been much worse if the Astros hadn't left so many runners stranded during the early innings.
And then there was Astros starter Pete Munro, who did a great job holding the Cards in the early innings. Phil Garner got more from Munro than anyone expected.
The great feats occurred in the seventh inning. With the score tied 4-4, Cardinals sluggers Albert Pujols and Scott Rolen hit back-to-back solo home runs. The Cards hit four homers in all, including a two-run shot by Larry Walker and an earlier two-run homer from Rolen.
So now we go to Houston, where Roger Clemens awaits the Redbirds lumber. Game 3 is Saturday afternoon.
