Punk Rock Countdown: No. 7 "Uncontrollable Urge," by Devo I know it's hard for you, dear reader, to imagine this suave, confident, articulate blogger as a confused, reticent teenager, alienated and unpopular, hanging out with other alienated, unpopular teens on long Midwestern nights. When I first discovered Devo perform -- I think it was on Saturday Night Live -- I was at first disturbed. But I warmed to them soon enough. Here, I thought, was a band that was like us: awkward, geeky dorks, jerkin' back and forth as they sang, acting uncomfortable and disconcerting. A group of spud boys from the Midwest. But they were punk.
"Uncontrollable Urge" is not the typical Devo offering. It's more mainstream punk, with a hard-driving guitar -- less experimental and alien than much of the Devo fare. It's about the id breaking free -- our deep, dark primal self crashing through the barriers of ego and superego and into the light of day. Nowadays, it's a song for a Mitsubishi commercial -- a sure sign that punk rock has indeed arrived.
