The 13 most overrated songs -- ever? I'm late to the game on this one. Blame it on work and the bombing that some are now calling the "7/7 Attacks" Anyhow: a couple of days ago, Robert Burke, with the help of an elite squad of in-the-know music bloggers released a list of the 13 most overrated songs. Many of them deserve to be there. No one could dispute the inclusion of "American Pie" (No. 1 on the list and, in the words of Thus Spake Drake, "Number one on my list of most annoying pub sing-a-long songs - best time to take a piss or a cigarette break outside"). Nor could they argue with "Free Bird" (No. 3) or that earworm from Outkast, "Hey Ya" (No. 4). Then there's that horrid Andrew Lloyd Weber song "Memory," from "Cats," is ranked at No. 7 but should be in the top three -- higher even than "Free Bird," if for no other reason than Free Bird's interminable three-guitar assault, which beats the hell out of Memmmmmory, all alone in the moonliiiight.... And if we're considering show tunes, I've got 13 of those to give you, just from "Fiddler on the Roof."
All in all, the blogcritics list of overrated tunes is comprehensive. But I've got to take issue with one of the selections. Queen's masterpiece, "Bohemian Rhapsody," falls in at No. 8. This song is incredible. It does not deserve the "overrated" tag. But blogcritics.org's Eric Olsen writes (obviously before the 7/7 Attacks): "Allow me to say that I despise 'Bohemian Rhopsody' with a fervor that makes want to crush something, anything British. How perverse can one nation be?"
Also, I agree with this guy when he writes: "why isn't 'Stairway to Heaven' on this list? ... God almighty, if there was a TV show about overrated songs, 'Stairway' would play over the opening credits!"
