Dischord grows up, but stays true to its roots
Alright, all you hardcore fans out there. A heads-up from alert blogreader KJo pointed me to NPR's coverage (with audio and sound files) of the 25th anniversary of Dischord records, which was the record label that put D.C. hardcore on the map. "Today," writes NPR, "the label may be a modern business, but it's still driven by the straightforward communalism that first defined it. 'We don't use contracts, lawyers, any of those kinds of things,' [co-founder Ian] MacKaye says. 'We are partners -- they make the music, and we make the records.'"

Essential listening: 20 Years of Dischord, released in 2002, contains works from bands like Minor Threat, Fugazi, Youth Brigade and newer stuff like Q and Not U. Just 25 bucks for the three-CD set. That's three CDs of great punk -- 73 Songs (23 of them unreleased), six video clips and 134-page book -- for a mere $25. Check out this track listing:
