We went to see the new Pink Panther on Sunday, and if anyone out there is a fan of the original, a fan of Peter Sellers or a fan of Steve Martin, for that matter: Don't go. You're in for a huge disappointment.
The movie itself isn't a remake, and thank goodness for that. Shawn Levy could never match Blake Edwards' cinematography and direction, nor do the writers of this new flick (Martin is among them) match the team of Edwards and Maurice Richlin. Plus, I never expected Steve Martin's version of Inspector Jacques Clouseau to match Peter Sellers' -- but I was hoping for a bit more from his performance. Martin is a comedic genius in his own right, but unfortunately he was misplaced in this role. I'm not sure who could fill Sellers's shoes as Clouseau -- Will Ferrell, perhaps? He might come closer than Steve Martin.
At least the opening music was good. (They stuck with the Henry Mancini score.) Oh, and then there was Beyonce, stinking up the place. We won't go there.
