Free mp3 Friday Happy Friday! While I try to wrap up the next installment of my countdown of 100 albums that changed my life, have a listen to some recent, free and legal mp3s. Accompanying blurbage comes courtesy of the flacks at Team Clearmont, who get paid to promote these bands, and who send me nice email notes every few days:
The New Sound of Numbers - "Frequency Transmission Systems". "The New Sound of Numbers is a new pop/experimental/post-punk project by Hannah Jones—visual artist and percussionist for Circulatory System and The Instruments. Jones recorded most of the album at home on her own, layering drums, various percussion, 12-string guitar and vocals." Debut album due in October. The New Sound of Numbers website.
Dark Meat - "Dead Man". "Dark Meat (full name: Dark Meat/Vomit Lasers Family Band/Galaxy) is an Athens mega-ensemble that can rock, and sway, and clap their hands to the beat in an area large enough to hold them." Dark Meat on MySpace.
The Black Neon - "Ralph and Barbara". "On Arts & Crafts, semi autobiographical tales of love and de-conscription from the DDR army ('Ralph & Barbara') and Man-Machine love affairs ('TX81Z') blend seamlessly into The Black Neons sprawling instrumentals played in the traditional Motorik style." The Black Neon on MySpace.
One Ring Zero - "Here Come the Mannequins". Avert your eyes! Avert your eyes! "One Ring Zero plays a completely warped and intelligent version of ethno-pop that comes off like Tom Waits, The Residents, and They Might Be Giants jamming at a Bar Mitzvah." One Ring Zero on MySpace.
Summer Hymns - "Start Swimming". One of "12 sugary sweet lullabies from Athens GA's finest southern songsmiths, Summer Hymns. It's the last vestiges of sunlight as the sun fades away; it's a mint julep on a humid summer afternoon." Summer Hymns on MySpace.
Two from Trentalange: "Monster" and "Take Me Home". "Evocative and atmospheric. It should come as no surprise that Barbara Trentalange - the voice and creative force behind Trentalange - is also a visual artist. Lush, moody and provocative, the songs on Photo Album of Complex Relationships are cinematic soundscapes built upon instrumentation that includes cello, piano, flute, bass and percussion, with Trentalage's voice - velvety and emotive - as the foundation and centerpiece.
